Malta 50 cents, this huge 10 sided coin was a response to needing a high value coin not made of silver. A Maltese Liri was always around £1.35 - £1.60. These massive coins were used heavily as major denominations.


5 mils, aluminium. Malta finally switched to Decimal currency in May 1972 and got their first set of coins from the aluminium 2, 3, and 5 mils through to the 50 cents. The mils coins only lasted until 1981 and most of these coins were only minted in 1972, 1976 and 1977 with the 25 cent arriving in 1975. The Republic was declared in late 1974 and a smaller series of coins up to 1 Liri came in 1986.


3 mils - This coin had a use, local postage was 1c3mils until 1976.
