1966 what a year, I have a lot for this year and Dorado has already shown half of it

First of all New Zealand - absolutely nothing, 1966 was downtime between the last predecimal coins and the decimal ones of the next year. Well the last sets came out, but they had 1965 dated coins, so you will just have to wait until tomorrow.

Australia on the other hand said hello to decimal currency on February 14th 1966.

The highlight was a silver 50 cent piece, previous to this time, their biggest coin was the Florin (Tane's Florin funtimes begins in 1963) worth 20 new cents, so they issued a silver piece and left the 20 cent as a muck metal coin.

36 million of the 80% silver coins were minted so by mid 1967 with rising silver prices, they had all been hoarded and became a bullion coin of choice for decades. They are NOT rare and even I have ended up with 8 of the darn things.

The 1c, 2c, 5c and 20c of 1966 I have all but the last in AU condition. A rare variety I don't have is a 1966 "wavy" 20 cent coin, David Graham has been trying to get one out of change for yonks - we wish him every success)

Most of the new coins were minted at the new national mint in Canberra but help from the UK (Tower and Llantrisant) was needed and the 10 cent coins above show how you can pick the English coins from Australian ones.

Previous to 1966, Australian coins had been minted mostly in Melbourne and Perth with the occasional ones from Sydney, London and in 1917 - Bombay for bronze!

To this date you can find coins from 1966 still in your Australian coinage, except the 1c, 2c and silver 50c obviously (The last has a melt value of around $10).

Nice coins everyone!

1966 was the last year all British pre-decimal coins were minted from the halfpenny to the halfcrown, including the last English amd Scottish shillings issued for circulation. Separate English and Scottish shillings had been minted since 1937, but both versions were legal tender across the whole of the UK!

France issued a new coin in 1966 - the aluminium-bronze 5 centimes. Worth around 1 US cent, it would remain in circulation up until the introduction of the Euro in 2002:

The new 5c coin was required as France had introduced the nickel half-franc the previous year, and it was the same size and color as the previous 5c piece - these two were among my left-over change when the Euro took over:

Numisrob showed the new 5 cent coin of France it replaced an old stainless steel 5c like this, the lowly 1 cent coin, whose days were numbered. Even in 1966 you may have brought half a bonbon with this teensy thing.
