1964 was the second to last year of NZ sterling coins, by this stage they had decided that decimal currency was coming and the Halfcrown was planned to be canned first - none were minted this year. The rest of the coins were, with jumbo mintages of the 1 penny, 3d, 6d and Florin.   Complete set of 1964 coins - NZ coins of this year are still high grade! It was Australia's last year of minting sterling coins too and only the 3d, penny and halfpenny were minted in 1964.  Most of the 3d were uncirculated or at least AU like this one. It was the only silver coin minted in 1964. Coins back to 1946 from 3d up were 50% silver, whilst NZ and UK were muck metal. Australia had plenty of mineral wealth, but by 1964 this was running dry.  Pennies and Halfpence got more use, with surplus coins being sold to New Zealand in 1966 after they had a penny shortage! Once we hit 1963 we see a full line up of Australian coins with the Florin, Shilling and Sixpence back.  Like New Zealand, we now had the oldest Mary Gillick portrait of Her Majesty. |

Incidentally, in case anyone is wondering, the QE2 pre-decimal sets in the blue cards are not official Royal Mint BU sets - those did not exist. The coins are held in cards from an album called a Bri-Lining that I bought about 30 years ago. Edited by NumisRob

I know that at least, our coin club meeting, someone brings along piles of old British coin magazines from the 1960s to 2020s and the 60s and 70s ones are riddled with ads selling those cards, albums for them (Full of acres of PVC filled Vinylite and acidic cardboard sleeves!  ) and even actual coins themselves. One ad offered cards for sets back to 1838! and another for gold sovereigns.   Norway 5 Kroner - Cupro nickel  South Vietnam - 10 Dong   Jersey, 1/12 shilling  Chile - 10 Centesimos |
