I'm glad to hear it Slerk! Really an amazing series to collect, lots of history within it and so many excellent varieties.

I think this is severely undergraded. The reverse is a bit lacking which I could see bringing it down to F-15 as a net grade. The obverse is certainly better than VG. I was on the fence between F-15 and VF-20 for the obverse. The wing detail, head detail and the breast detail match PCGS photograde for VF-20. The factor I noticed that could down grade the obverse was the lack of detail in the tail feathers. Nice to have a scarce variety formally attributed but I think they messed up on the grade in my opinion.

I was surprised with the grade myself. I was thinking F-15 was a solid grade for this piece but I guess they decided otherwise. The reverse of 1858/7's is always very weakly struck on the right side, even on UNC coins and that seems to throw PCGS off a bit I think.

Here is an ebay auction for a NGC graded VF Details example. The reverse details may be slightly better but the obverse of the OP's coin looks the same if not better than the NGC coin.

I agree the obverse looks VF. I thought initially I would get F-15 and I compared my coin to many examples thinking I was right. I am confident in my ability to grade FEC's and I believe it is under-graded as well.

Just personal observation, but I have noticed that when you send a coin in to PCGS as raw with variety attribution they tend a lot of the time to be harder on it than if you just send in without the request for variety.

I strongly disagree with this this grade. for what little it's worth. Fk'ing VG-10?!

Funny enough, they didn't label this properly with the variety the first time. I had my form labeled correctly and I asked for the variety label, but It was slabbed up a regular 1858 large letters anyways.

At this point PCGS still had the coin, so I sent them side-by-side images of a PCGS certified 8/7 example and my example and they admitted it was an error that they didn't include the variety. They fixed it within a few hours and the new slab was correct, as you saw with the slab image above. So it was a VG10 to them variety or not.

I think unfortunately it's just undergraded. I may go through the process someday to have the grade re-considered but for now I'm content. Hopefully I'll be able to upgrade it sometime anyways since my goal for my set was most coins to be in VF-XF.

I looked at the PCGS price table and I must say that the difference in the value of coins between VG-10 and F-12/15 is minimal. I think you should not waste money and time on revaluation of the coin.

On the plus side the stated grade should make it an easy re-sale down the line. Any saavy collector would take one look at that and consider it a bargain for the under grade given.

Thanks all! I probably won't resubmit this one just because having the variety correctly attributed was my main desire for this piece. As long as I have the variety in my collection, that's what matters to me. I can upgrade it in the future, which is what's likely to happen if I don't cherry-pick another in higher grade.

As a solid piece of my FEC collection, it'll likely remain in my collection even if I get an upgrade for my registry. It's an attractive example of a really nice overdate and I'll always be happy to have multiple of a rare variety in the collection.
