A discussion about how I judge a coin to be struck on a incomplete planchet which I have dubbed the "Smith effect"was started here , http://goccf.com/t/429329 If anyone would like to post examples of their clips that have this narrowing of the rim away from the center of the coin as the rim approaches the clip , please do. Examples of fake clips and damage where the rim narrows towards the center of the coin , ( a good indicator of a fake or damaged incomplete planchet) would be great as well. Many thank from Mr. Smith !

@STONE: I will look for my clips, left me 30 to 40 after I finish the % gauche. Me I will always say SMITH Rim Effect on those. I will be glad to help you with this study.

I posted this tiny clip a long time ago, but I think I still have this coin. If you need better pics I'll dig it out. http://goccf.com/t/249224

My 1924 straight clip. This one showes the effect on all four points where the rim meets the clip.

Be happy to post a bunch of real and fake, but just working too long hours right now to do such. Think mid-September and I can add a lot of examples.

CoinHi Your larger clip definitely has the effect. Once a fake clip is shown the difference will be more obvious. If this were faked by cutting with a jewelry saw for example, the inside high point of the rim would have continued around to the cut and shown a sharp interior point. The obverse example from your coin shows a slight narrowing and the reverse actually rounds around at the clip. Both examples show the lack of metal to fill the rim but in different ways. Like I said, not seeing the sharp interior rim point opens the path to it being a mint produced error.
