Looking to learn a little about toning. I have two examples. The first is the obverse of a silver eagle, the second the reverse of a 64 Kennedy:

How would you describe the toning? Would either increase the value of a coin... not necessarily these coins, but say on something like a Morgan.

Toning is preferred by many collectors, but this one looks like it was toned chemically, not natural

Very deversified opinions on that subject for sure. I just don't like toned coins and then there are others that go nutty for those. Yours looks OK but like I said if it was me I'd dip it in something to clean it up. Now that would irritate the toned coin people you know.
You might want to check out the TC forum. It's a forum for Toned Coins.

In my opinion it is Chemical toning. Placing a silver coin in a newly painted wodden box, closset,....etc for about 3 to 6 month would give you similar results.

The silver eagle in the first pic was given to me by my father in 2004. It was pristine back then. I didn't know what to do with it; had never seen one before; and was not into collecting. So I kept it in a cardbard box in my sock drawer. Somehow that coin and box made it to my freezer for several years, before returning to the sock draw. It has been handled many times. I have no idea when it started turning, or what the agent was. I am not particularly happy with the looks of the coin, but as it was a gift from my father I am keeping it.

I think the toning on that eagle is kind of ugly. I see some toning that is absolutely beautiful. But this toning does not add value to this coin, in my opinion.

The second pic is a Kennedy that is toning. I see these go for a pretty penny on ebay - with the same amount of toning around the edges.
