One of my website visitors is trying to get some info on a 1957 "steel" cent. He reports the coin is magnetic, but I'm sure it can't be something authentic from the mint. Can anyone provide a more complete explantion of what we've got here? Thanks.

You got me on this one! I've never heard of this. It may be a coin that was struck on a wrong planchet (it would have to be a world coin planchet as the US had no steel coinage in that time period.)

The US minted steel coins in the 50's for Costa Rica and also in 1944 for Belgium. It could be that some of these planchets got mixed in with the regular cent planchets.

Susan: The Belgium 2 francs 1944 were done on '43 USA steel cent blanks at about the same time as the steel cents were being made, so they don't really count as different planchets.

DJG: Whatever it is, I don't think it's a simple 'plate job', especially if it's magnetic. I checked with my dad (a university chemistry lecturer) and he thinks that, while it might be technically possible to plate iron onto a copper coin, the result wouldn't be magnetic. I don't think it would stay "iron-looking" for very long, either.

Hi Daniel

The cent certianly shows none of the telltale signs of plating at least in the pic,,

I think the best shot is wrong planchet , and I would probly try and have the cent certified or contact coneca about having it authenticated.

Thank you all for your help, thus far. The reader has added some new info: While his 1957 cent has some magnetic properties, it doesn't have the same magnetism as a 1943 cent. Perhaps a professionally plated job using magnetic plating material could explain this?

That is pretty neat. Have 2 43 steel cents in my cup holder. (side note: really need to get those things inside my place.
