I purchased Airtites similar to the ones seen in the photo. They are inexpensive, but seem to be inferior, as my coins can barely fit into them They clearly are foreign-made / not "genuine."

Just wondering if these Airtites will be good for long-term storage. Does anyone have experience with these second-hand storage devices?

The real deal is not that expensive - why cut corners when you're trying to preserve your coins? It's like buying a cheap bike helmet.

John - yes, they were called Airtites. But I think the term was used generically.

I bought the discounted Airtites because of the great quantity that I use to store my coins.

Do 2 x2 cardboard flips adequately protect coins from tarnishing, spotting, etc. when used for long-term storage? I've seen coins stored in them for years with little effect. But I guess it depends on other factors too, e.g., temperature, humidity, etc.

Interestingly, some of my coins, stored in Dansco albums, have held up quite well. I thought for sure that some would tone, tarnish, spot,. etc. My American Silver Eagles and proof coins still appear brilliant after years in assorted albums.

For an airtight to be most effective, the interior dimensions should be an exact match for the coin. If small enough, the capsule will fit into a standard album page pocket.

I use ex British Royal Mint positive screw sealed capsules for my most valuable modern coins, but they don't have the added advantage mentioned above.

Both types are unsuited for other than modern coins.

Re used
Snap shut airtights do not tolerate being opened more than about 5 times, the friction seal loosens, and risk is that they can fall apart.
Perfectly OK for long term storage, but do not re open. Best used in much the same way as a slab.

From what I can discern, slab manufacturers do not guarantee their products to be airtight, but they would be close to being the next best thing
