I would think it's a variety. I don't know if this is common or not, so I will have to check the books.

OK, I check the books and the books list the red background printing one as the normal one. Did you say the white one was the normal one?
Anyways, I would think this changed because maybe Brunei changed printers or maybe had issued a different version to make differentiating notes easier. Anyways, these two notes are of different printings, I would think, and they go good together as a set.
This is maybe similar to the last version of the Malaysian 10 Ringgit when the central bank changed printers, codes, slight designs and thus came up with 3 to 5 different 10 ringgit notes for the same series.

Looks to me like it missed the pink tinting -- note the differences in the central design under the signature -- it looks like it missed the pink tint also. Unless the pink faded badly, or something. Note how the serial number on the note in question looks almost "transparent" -- looks underinked, also. It therefore may be an error, I believe.

ahh... that's true too! I didn't think of that!
As for the serial, could it be that the camera angle and lighting made it shiny? If you look at the paler note, the security strip appears to be glistening.

wd1040,youre totally correct indeed.I use my camera took all this pictures with flashlight to make the serial number seems to be faded, shinning or transparent.Nope, the book is right, the red colour background is normal but the white colour background is unsual.Meanwhile, can you notice there are many BLUE colour dots on center icon underneath the signature and words on white background instead of purple colour dots underneath the signature and words on the normal red background? Again,I think all this notes picture without any flashlight and seems the serial number does not shinning, fading or tranparenting at all.In fact,The serial number on white background is much much darker than the red background serial number when viewing by naked eyes.I hope everything is clear now to everyone. Please enlarge the pictures below to see carefully. So what is your comment right NOW?

I have just discovered this note has another variety "broken security thread line"(normally is straight line along),Never seen any broken security thread line before if it is a straight line along. So is this considered as a double varieties note?
