First of all, this isn't really a Chinese 10c note. It's a FEC issued by the BoC for foreigners to use in China in specialty western shops before ... 1994 I think. Real 10c notes issued by the central bank are different.
Second, I've looked at my collection of FECs and I don't see the number. At first I thought I would be a plate designation, but since those are the first two notes I have seen with this "y" or "9" designation I don't really know...
As for the dot, could it be a count mark or a puncture mark that was done on the note after printing? Is it ink or something?

Would you happen to have more 10c notes? Maybe the plate used for this printing had a defect.

Yeah, I mean none of my 10c notes have the Y and the dot, either, so I think you do have an error note! And a search on ebay comes up with nothing about this, so I guess it is a special note! One more thing, because the Y is outside of the design and in the border, I would think it's not an identifier, but seriously a mistake on the plate or something like that.

wd1040,Yes,youre right indeed. It is an error note and it is not common at all becouse I cant find the same varieties at ebay.com and other websites,so does in any of the catalogue.Till now seems nobody knows anything about why this would happen.
