1800 and 1803 (large 8) Half Dimes from very early in my coin collecting career. You will note the 1803 has some issues, rim nicks and some scratches (lowers shield), as well as possibly a cleaning at some point. Please let me know what you think their net grades would be. I would also appreciate (if possible and allowed) an estimate of their values. Thanks! Edited by GERMANICVS 09/11/2022 03:16 am

These are amazing specimens of scarce coins! I see the 1800 one as VF(20). I see the 1803 one as EF(45) details. The 1803 is the more common (although 1803 is still REALLY scarce!) large 8 variety, although it is still significantly scarcer than the 1800. I once read that of all pre 1829 Half Dimes, 1795 is actually the easiest date to acquire. These Draped Bust Half Dimes are gorgeous. Both are super tough coins that I wish I owned!

Thank you, Adam.
By the way, your 1798 dime looks truly gorgeous. A coin to be proud of.

VF-25 on the 1800 Half Dime and XF-40/45 details (damage) on the 1803 Half Dime. Both coins are just stunning. Congratulations on owning two absolutely spectacular pieces of history.

Agree, VF-20 and EF (likely details). Impressive examples indeed.

VF20 and XF45 Details (net VF30 for reverse rim damage, scratch, strike, overall surfaces). Both solid examples.

VF25 on the 00 and XF40/45 details on the 03
just looking at other examples the 00 looks like its in the $3k area obviously the 03 is more difficult to price. PCGS has only graded 1 at VF30, 1 at XF40 and 1 at AU55. using Ty2020b's net of 30 it would also be in that $3k range

VF-20 on the 1800, EF-45 on the 1803. You've got some great early American coinage in your collection.

Very uneven grading: for the Reverses, I would say VG8 for the 1800, and G4 for the 1803. For the Obverses, I would give F12 to the 1800 and solid VF20 for the 1803. Your 1803 Obverse is the real winner. These coins have quite attractive eye-appeal with a nice patina that contrasts the design elements well.

Thank you all for your grade opinions. Very, very useful I was at F12/F15 on the 1800, but I tend to be quite strict on my grading. The 1803 was more of a problem due to the scratches, nicks, and cleaning. Thank you @panzaldi and @Ty2020b for the actual net grade for this coin and the valuations.

NickMar28 early silver are challenging to grade due to strike issues. discerning strike from wear is paramount when assessing these. take some time to look at slabbed coins to build your knowledge base GERMANICVS - I can see the 00 at VF20. I thought it was between 20 and 25 and leaned toward the 25 due to the sharpness of the high points on both sides. I know you tend to be a little strict on your grades so I can agree with a VF20 grade on it. both of these coins are just very attractive examples of early minting and challenge even the seasoned collector to grade them due to the strike issues at these times.

GERMANICVS, fantastic coins as always. I think you are too conservative on the 1800. I think it easy makes VF-20. I would say the 03 is XF details.

Thank you, panzaldi and psuman08. I stand corrected on my grading of the 1800 (and happy too)
