Hello everyone,

I found this in a coin lot today along with an Austrian commemorative and a medieval hammered coin I've posted elsewhere.

However, I am at a loss on this one. Numista lists this exact example at N#11258 KM#5 Lec # 22

I haven't handled this coin before and I rarely handle aluminum coins long enough to get familiar with them. At first I thought it was plastic, but it's metal.

It weighs 2.24 and is 27 mm in diameter.

This variant does not have the 'essai' above the 1948 as nearly all the sold examples online have.

It also seems to sell for much more than I'd expect. Most post war french colonials sell for $3-10.

Hopefully, there is a colonial or french colonial expert that can help with this one.

Thank you all!

This coin without 'Essai' seems to be listed on Numista:

@numisrob, that's caused much of the confusion. The only sold or listed examples I seem to find are the 'essai' which is a limited mintage near 'sample' set; yet this coin seems to have some strange premium attached to it. I'm looking for some explanation on why this french colonial is 'unique' in the market/amongst collectors compared to other similar french colonials.

Thanks for your response. I couldn't easily link numista on my phone.
