The tiny counterstamp on this 1822 large cent reads as follows: (crown) / EVANS / OLD CHANGE / LONDON. Brunk listed two other US coins with this stamp and erringly thought them to be American merchant issues.

I've located pics of an 1840-50's era British lancet, a blood-letting surgical knife, that bears a matching logo stamp. This lancet was made by John Evans of 10 Old Change (road) in London.

Now that the attribution of this counterstamp is solidified, I'd really like to know the Newcomb variety of this 1822 large cent. A dealer friend of mine thought it had some attributes of the rare N-14 variety;this, adding that the location of the stamp interfered with his assessment.. I'm hoping that a few of our knowledgable copper guys will chime in on this aspect.

This is not a Newcomb-14 variety. Two specific obverse markers that make this not match against a graded PCGS example are Star 12 and the circular scribe line. Your example has Star 12 positioned directly centered above a dentil, while the PCGS example has it positioned between two dentils. The scribe line differs from both examples, as your coin has the scribe line (noticeable around stars 1-3) far from the dentils, while the PCGS example has the scribe line directly through the dentils.

The reverse shows the lettering farther from the wreath, particularly S-2 in STATES.

My resources for attributing large cents is limited, although confirming a variety is quite simple. We'll have to wait for someone else to correctly identify the Newcomb variety.

The easiest determiner of the 1822 N-14 is the leaf point under the (O)F: it's the only 1822 that has the leaf tip completely to the left of the F's post. Reverse of 1821. Pics courtesy of PCGS.
