Quote:probably a
Grease Filled Die at this location.
This is certainly not a
Grease Filled Die. The position of the 50C denomination on the reverse is in-line with Miss Liberty's cap, one of the deepest parts of the obverse relief. Because there was not enough metal to filled both parts, the 50C is weak. 1834 was the year the chief engraver, Kneass, did the most experimentation with trying to get the strike better on all of the half dollars.
This particular example is the 1834 O-115 R-2 small date and small letters variety in an earlier die state. Strike weakness in typical areas. Kneass increased the relief for the half dollars in the 1830's and many of those examples are seen not fully struck up. This variety showcases heavy recutting of the 0 in 50C. Nice original look on this coin, I give this an XF-40.
Suffering from bust half fever.
