Looks like acid damage to me. Maybe a long-buried coin in acidic soil.

Looks like a CN cent, which weigh more than the later bronze ones.

Ouch that is in rough shape, but finding an IHC is always cool.

Agree that it's likely a copper-nickel cent that has been heavily corroded by spending a long time in the ground. Weight of those were 4.67g, but this guy has a lot of metal loss due to the corrosion. Still an interesting find, however!
