I found this dime when I was a little kid (maybe 16 years ago now) and kept it. I have never seen another one like it. When I was a teenager I called a coin dealer to inquire about its worth and after describing what the coin looked like he told me they are generally not worth more than face value, with a good one being worth no more than 50 cents at most. Is that still about right? even so, I'm still going to keep it. I just like the way it looks.
Anyone know how this happened anyways? I always imaged that half the coin was "Peeled" off somehow. When I was a kid I tried to peel the other half off with a safety pin, then a knife. Obviously it didnt work. :(

I don't know exactly what the error is called, and I don't know what it's worth, but it does look like a genuine error.

The reason I respond, however, is because the LAST place to go for good detailed analysis of erros or varieties is a local dealer. Most dealers don't know much of anything about them, and instead of saying so, a lot of them concoct some story that's usually wrong just to look like they know everything about coins. It's unfortunate but true.

Someone else will be along at some point soon to let you know exactly what you have and what it's worth, but my guess is a partially split clad layer and roughly $50.

It's missing part of the clad layer. The section of cladding in the middle (containing the LIBE of LIBERTY) peeled off before the strike. The two flanking sections peeled off after the strike.

As far as value, it's probably worth around $20.
