That special mint mark is the logo of the Royal Canadian Mint. From my understanding, it began to appear on pennies in 2006. Coins are also minted with no logo, or the "P" logo. The "P" logo signifies that the coins have a special composition, for pennies, it is .940 steel, .045 copper, .015 nickel. The coins with no logo and the mint logo are made from copper plated zinc.
I believe that the Mint Logo started to show up on all denominations in May or June 2006. I first noticed it on the 10 year twoonie, and found three different designs for that year.
Thanks a lot for the information! I already noticed the "P"-coins were magnetic and the "no-P" coins were not. I'll look for non-magnetic coins with logo.
