The FS-501 is a weak second impression far to the northeast of the mint mark. This shows no trace of that variety. I think you've confused Machine Doubling on the variety vista images for the variety itself when the actual variety looks nothing like the coin you have here

If the mintmark is taller than the other devices around it. Also not that the size will be reduced by the MD removing the contour of that device.

Note on all three of the RPM's there is Machine Doubling on them. But the MD is not the RPM. The 001,003 are showing the RPM on the fields. On the OO2, the RPM is south and the device is taller than normal. Machine Doubling never creates a variety, it just alters the variety post strike. Look for the double punch on the mintmark. Note the reduction of the removal of the contour that Machine Doubling creates. (reducing the normal size of the device/RPMs)

CoopHome: Can Machine Doubling be seen on mintmarks? yes. If will usually affect other devices as well, especially if the mintmark is taller that the surrounding devices)

If the Mintmark is taller, (deeper set into the die) it will be clipped with MD easier. Note the the listings on Variety Vista. All three dies are showing Machine Doubling on them, but that is not the RPM. The RPM will show a double punch event to the die. Alteration by the machine doesn't make it a RPM. It could mean it is a Normal Mintmark or A machine doubled, RPM. Take a look at the link on the post above and see the differences on these three die listing. (look at the description of where the RPM is on each one) Then you will see why the MD has nothing to do with the RPM.
