I'm not aware of any silver nickel planchets other than 1942-1945, and no foreign silver planchets that size in the '70's. It's likely discolored from environmental exposure and such. You can take the weight just to double check things.

Weight it. Try the tissue test. I never heard of a 1974 silver nickel. Maybe painted? John1

Doesn't appear silver to me in these pics. Weight will confirm.

What makes you think it is silver? Looks like an ordinary nickel. Weight should be 5 g .

How can one suggest weighing it when all nickels have been set to weigh the same since nickels started. Five grams? Not sure that'll be how to find out

If it was silver, it would weigh differently. John1

All other specifications are the same, the weight of a .900 fine silver nickel would be 5.75 grams

Well, besides the fact that silver wasn't used in nickels in 1974, weighing it would verify its oddity (the difference in metals. What you have a an environmentally toned/damaged regular 1974 business strike nickel. Value: 5 cents.
