I only have a few notes and they are in poor condition so are not valuable but hold a lot of interest to me. Is there an " RedBook" for US notes?

Here is a pictures of a 1929 $20 banknote. It's had a hard life, very worn. Can anyone tell me about what "Specimen" means?

specimens are supposed to be trial versions of banknotes, when printing a new serie they are used for tests etc.
they're usually sold at higher prices. Yet I have no idea how much yours is worth

Krause puts out a very reasonably priced book: Standard Catalog of United States Paper Money. I didn't find anything in there on specimen notes, but it may help you with your other ones. (I also didn't go through it page-by-page.

Yes the paper looks and feels real but it is like it went through a washing machine.

You got me thinking. Except for the word specimen clearly across the face of this 1929 note, it looks to me like the real thing. Wouldn't a novelity or toy dollar bill have to be a bit more obvious so as not be passed in circulation as a counterfeit? And a counterfeit bill would not have the word Specimen on it. Has anyone else seen real or fake $20 dollar notes like this?

What are the some ways that I could test to see if this note is real. I don't have another 1929 $20 note, but if someone has, could they take a good quality photo and send it to me via email. I could then check the finer details of the design.

Edited to say I found a 1929 $20 note on the net to compare. Still looks real.

It could be my perception, washing machine helps make the image understandable as far as the off color etc I have never heard of a specimen released into public from the bureau of printing and Engraving. wich doesn't mean that they don't exsist. I own some specimens from american bank note company (private) and some others.

That photo had to be reduced in size (mega pixals)for posting to this site. I could take another photo of the front and back and email it directly to you, if you like, to help confirm what your thinking if you think that would help.
Makes me wonder why someone would make a fake $20 not with the word Specimen clearly across the front. For that matter, I wonder why a government printer would do that also. It's a strange one.

I think this is a rough draft of a 20$ dollar bill that was never made and maybe you only have the last and only one.

Its just a thought
