This post is here and not in the wanted section because of the interest I feel it might bring. (if the other moderators want to move it- feel free)
Attention: KNIGHTS and others
I am interested in putting together a set of AUSTRALIAN coins that can be used as a grading standard.
If it is successful, Others too may be interested.
As I have proof coins I am not seeking any of theses.
I want to purchase- obtain from any of the members back in OZ a "set of graded AUSTRALIAN coins to be used as a grading scale for comparisons.
I am looking for either one each of the same coin or different coins. each labled as to their grade.
It does not matter if these are pre decimal pennies or decimal coins. (due to the expense that could be involved, I do not want to use coins with a face value of more than $1.
That leaves 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 cent and $1 coins.
Grades I am seeking are for the set are:
Gem uncirculated Choice uncirculated Uncirculated almost uncirculated extremely fine very fine fine very good.
This is being done because I do not trust my grading skills and there is no one in my area that I can take my coins to and say - do you think these coins are graded correctly by the AUSTRALIAN GRADING SYSTEM Any help or suggestions are appreciated Cheers

As this is a set that, when pictured, could be used here on the forum as well, I think the post should remain here. This set could benefit all of us.

To help you out a bit Richard....Guareenteed GEM could come from a wedding set, ChUnc from a mint set, unc from a roll, almost unc from a roll, all the rest would be from circution.
I could help you out with a few bits and pieces!!!
I am sure I can dig up a VG, Unc and ChUnc easily enough...can keep checking change for the other grades.

Thank you I appreciate the offer, but remember I am looking to put together a grading set -not scrounge from anyone- I am willing to pay for the coins which will make up this set, that is why I am not looking for high end or bullion coins. Of course anyone that wants to donate a 1930 Penny or a 2001 $20 Donald Bradman or a 1830 Holey dollar and dump or a 1920 large head sovereign will not be turned away

for the predecimals it might be wise to purchase an old renniks or collecting and inesting in australian coins and banknotes by greg macdonald 1991 edition as all the pictues of all denominations and the points where the coins wear out are shown in the grading section , and the renniks actually shows all the different coins in all grades hope this helps

I have the new Renniks, hard to locate the older ones over here- but I feel having a tangible set would be more fun and also good for demonstrations. Pictures are easy to come by - in the US there is even a book which illustrates all the grades in photo form- that is why I would like to put together a fair dinkum hands on "grading set"

I know what you are saying RG.
Do you want a full grade set or denomination set for each grade?
Also do you prefer decimal or pre?

It does not matter decimal or pre- It also does not matter if it is a full grade set or denomination for each grade. i am looking to have a set that when I do a presentation to a youth or even adult group- I can say - this is grade A-B-c etc. now take the coin you have and see if you can match it to the proper grade. does this make any sense?

it is a very informative book you won richard , please let me know what you think of it when you get it , as I found the grading section very useful and the varieties shown on the predecimals is helpful as well as the picutes showning privy mark location on page 47

Got it but there must be a full moon out because life is just al little nuts right now and I haven't been able to get 10 minutes to sit down and read it.
I am still planning on having Shane put together a set for me. I think as suggested before dollars would make an nices set and could be done rather inexpensively.
What say ye Bigfella.
