A few months ago I inherited my step-grandfather's coin collection (he passed away before I was born, my step-dad finally thought I was old enough/responsible enough to own it). I'd like to start grading them, and sending the "worthy" coins off to NGC to be certified/slabbed.

I'd really appreciate your help in grading this collection I've inherited. I'm going to post a handful of coins at once, so as not to overwhelm you guys, or my scanner. lol

First up:
1. 1914 Barber dime
2. 1914 Barber quarter
3. 1889 Morgan dollar

Again, any help would be appreciate. I own the Red Book and have looked through it's very limited grading information, but wanted to use the cognitive surplus of the forums here to help. Thanks!

#1, Looks G-6 to me.
#2, Looks VG-8
#3, Lots of rim damage and rubbing on Liberty's face. Also looks like some type of chemical was used to try and clear it. Detail looks just about EF-40, however coin will grade less based on the damage, etc...

The RedBook is a pretty good start since it can give the basics for what you need to jump a level of grade. i.e. "Some letters of Liberty visible" but not all keeps your Barber quarter to a VG grade. Having said that, if this will remain a hobby of yours and you're not planning on selling the coins, I would recommend the book Photograde. I want to say it's by James Ruddy, but I can't remember exactly and I'm not at home. This book will go into more detail and will help to find the low and high end of each grading level as well. There are a lot of other recommendations out there as well. Check out the supplies forum here and search around.

Oh, and welcome to the forum.
