New addition...Thought I'd post it here with a question.
Really enjoying these big bronze provincials.

Does anyone have an idea who the standing diety might be?

Pontos, Neokaisareia. Septimius Severus. 193-211 AD. AE 29mm (14.60 gm). Dated CY 142 (205/6 AD).
Obv.: laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right.
Rev.: Cult image of uncertain deity on tall base within tetrastyle temple; pellet in pediment. RG 147 var. (rev. legend); SNG Hunterian 1154 (same obv. die); SNG von Aulock 100 (same obv. die). VF.

Septimius-Severus-Provincial.

That is a pretty awesome coin, Paul. I've admired the temple reverses for some time, but sadly don't have one.

I don't imagine that anyone knows for sure who the standing god actually is, but the extract below from Roma Numismatics may help.

Cheers, Jim

"The tutelary deities of Septimius Severus' home city of Lepcis Magna (also spelt Leptis) were the Phoenician gods Shadaphra and Melqart, who were equated with Liber Pater or Bacchus, and Hercules respectively. Their importance to the city is attested by several inscriptions there, their prominence in Lepcitanian sculpture, the fact that their temples occupied central locations within the old forum, and the joint appearance of both Liber Pater and Hercules (or their attributes) on the coinage of Lepcis Magna from the first century BC to the first century AD."

Interesting coin. Could it be an imperial cult temple, where a deified emperor is worshipped? The statue being the emperor, holding a spear/staff/standard in one hand and - maybe - a globe (possibly with a Victory) in the other (yes, you have to use a bit of imagination to see that ). Not completely unlike how emperors are shown on some coins (and statues). The dot on the temple pediment would then be the emperor's clipeus virtutis, his shield of valor.

Both Jim and Erafjel make excellent points...to which I have nothing to add. *smile* Other than to say...very nice coin, Paul. An inspired query! I'm not sure I would even have thought to ask that question.
