I found this 1836 Half Dime in a jar of foreign coins that belonged to my grandfather. I don't know why it was there? The coin is very bright, but it has wear. I assume it has been cleaned in some manner. Has the value of this coin been cleaned away? What would it be graded? If its is gradable do I send it to NGC or PCGS, or would they just BB it and return it. Thanks I am new to coin collecting and have a lot to learn...

You are correct it has been cleaned. I don't think it will slab with a grade, but you could get it in a slab with a Genuine label. Might be a waste of money as it has every sign of being genuine. It certainly still retains some value and I would say it is has VF-20 details.

If you're new, you've already done a lot of homework....

This one's value probably doesn't cover the cost of authentication. I agree with Colin's opinion, and as such the value is no more than $35-ish. If you're going to sell it, decent pics will be all you need to maximize the value - the target audience for this coin will know what they're looking at without needing a slab to tell them.

Or, they'll be so foolish they won't need one either....

It looks like its probably been cleaned, but the photos are not very good. I'd peg the grade a little higher than VF-20. Maybe VF-30 or so.
