Last week I posted 20 some Washington Silver Quaters on my ebay store starting them @ $2.99 and by the time the auctions closed only 8 or 9 sold...the kicker is at the time of closing the spot price for the %age of silver in the coins were $3.02 and most of the coins were 1935-1940's and not just junk silver. Any clue on why people wouldn't pay less than spot for a coin with numismatic value. ps..shipping was $.99..which I thought was fair...? Personally I think Silver is "cheap" and a good buy right now. Any input?

People consider shipping price when purchasing, so that the coins which were priced at 3c below spot price would actually cost 96c above, or to put it another way, priced at a 32% premium to the silver spot price. Not knowing the condition of the coins or anything, I can not say much about how fair a price that is, but people who are only interested in the coins as bullion value would probably not be very interested.

I see the figure of 10x face bandied about just for junk silver, so I am not sure why these didn't sell? I assume they were in collectable condition?

Probably because your start price was too high.. I am not sure where you get your spot prices from but the high last week would have put a Quarter @ $2.62 (Spot $14.49) 30 cent less than your start price.. Yes they may be good coins and worth more than spot but generally ebayers are looking for bargains...

nohope587...i was just quoting ot the top of my head for monday's pricing..yes Friday closed @ $2.6213...
nod2003...yes I do understand the shipping does decrease the %age, but shipping does cost money and more money here directly.
I don't know...If I came across coins with a condition to have numismatic value for "around spot"..I think I would have to buy.
One of the coins that didn't sell for $2.99 was a 48S in AU50-55, which was stated in the description. My feedback should portray that I am an honest seller and when I write a grade in the description, I am taking the risk of having neg feedback if the buyer doesn't agree or I have no questions asked return policy. I don't know? It is nothing I am going to lose sleep over (sold the 48S to a member of this forum for a few cents over spot because he was interested).
Just venting I guess y'all. Thank you as always for your responses. They do mean a lot to me...and even though I can justify the reasoning of my thinking, you guys tell it like you see it...and that helps me. So..Thank you!

Was that $0.99 shipping per coin, or did you have a volume discount?

Shipping discounts were available at checkout invoice. But I can only do so much as to combining shipping.
Total fees for listing and selling a $2.99 coin is: $.35 insertion fee; $.32 final value fee; $.42 paypal fee; $.42 for a stamp = $1.51. That does not take into consideration any time or shipping materials...so there is only so much working room when it comes to discounted shipping, but I do offer it.

I think the problem is more with the economy than with your pricing. I'm seeing it in my business and perusing Craigslist and ebay I think there are just more sellers than buyers right now. I've never seen so many "collectibles" for sale on Craigslist as right now, with many people finding out that the "Limited Edition Collectible Pewter Wishing Well" did not in fact increase in value, but, rather, is worth about five cents on the dollar. Coins obviously aren't as bad, but there is a glut on the market and speculators are going for the more desperate people who are selling at 50% or 75% of spot.

ebay is not the place to sell items under 10.00 because you have Pay Pal and ebay fees and costs of time etc. Better to go to a coin shop or do a garage sale or free online ad.

Do you clearly state that you offer a shipping discount? Sometimes I'll ask the seller if there are several cheap items I'm interested in...other times I'll move on if they don't specify.
The paypal fees scale down quickly (on a percentage basis) on combined auctions (paid together), as do the postage and materials.
You want to remove obstacles that would prevent folks from wanting to win several of your items at once.
And my experience is that auctions that start low (99 cents) tend to end up higher than those with starting bids that are close to the perceived value of the item.
Just my thoughts on the matter.
