Hello everyone,
Would I be right in assuming this is not mint damage? I found it a bit hard to accurately show in pics... but done my best. Any help greatly appreciated

On a coin this heavily circulated, I would assume any apparent "damage" is caused by its long history in the hands of humans, rather than some kind of mint error.

And in the case of a reasonably conspicuous "error" like this, if it had actually left the mint looking like that, then I would tend to think that somebody, long ago, would have noticed and pulled it out of circulation before it got to that state. Especialyl considering that the coin is first year of issue, every coin in circulation would have been examined reasonably carefully as dolalr coins were still new and different.

In this case, my best guess for an explanation for the damage is some carefully applied corrosives.

Please show both sides of the coin instead of two of the same side.
I agree that it is a combination of wear and corrosion.
It didn't look like that when the coin was struck at the mint.

I have seen gold coins in this sort of condition that have been illegally 'jingled', for a small amount of gold recovery per coin.

I have also seen British One Pound forgery coins with the same appearance.

I have to admit that I can't really determine which is the case with the One Dollar pictured, if it is very heavily circulated, or if it is a forgery.

Either way. it doesn't matter much to a collector; next to worthless anyway.
