on this 1964 D cent on the reverse is the damage caused by a penny machine or what would have made the lettering to distort like that

Given the photos presented, it appears the coin has seen a lot of circulation and has post mint damage.

Might be from a machine of some sort, agree.

Doesn't really matter how it happened, but the coin was damaged. Now a melt coin or a spender. Not a mint error.
