This was in an error lot and hadn't really thought much about it other than a fairly well-smooshed off center. When there is already a planchet in the chamber when a coin is struck off center, you get a uniface strike and there is nowhere for all that metal to go but out, so they can get pretty fun-looking.

But this one almost looks like it was struck off center and then off center again given how much is going on between the details and the unstruck portion of the planchet. However, the oddity that I can't explain is the crenulated edge along the entire struck portion. Just don't know how that happened.

This one really grabs my eye! I love the extended LIB LIBERTY which does make me wonder how many strikes we are seeing.

I have a couple of dozen coins like this some have this same serrated edge. I've always thought it could be from contact with other coins as it proceeded down the line from the press to the bagging station. The edge can get razor thin where the planchet plays out and can becomes very fragile. It gets hammered by the other coins and gets folded and rough in the process, or so I believe.

I've got to stop sitting on my hands and shoot some pictures of my error collection. I've got a new digital microscope that will make it much easier to research and identify details on the coins.

Thanks for posting this one! I think your excellent photography has motivated me enough to get started!

Very interesting. In looking at the rev, I wonder if there weren't three strikes.

Really appreciate the great comments! Wouldn't it be fun to actually be able to see a 3D rendering in motion of how something like this ended up as it is?
