Hi,

I'm in the process of purchasing a possible Chinese (perhaps Japanese?) coin but unable to translate the legend on the obverse (reverse is blank), I was also hoping to pin this down to a date if possible.

Thanks.

Many coins that look like this having that bottom character are Japanese

Correct; this one is Japanese, the standard "Kan Ei Tsu Ho" design, issued for a couple hundred years, mid-1600s to mid-1800s.

Experts in the coinage can use differences in the calligraphy to narrow down the date a bit further; I am no such expert.
