I was thinking about buying a proof Mercury dime since this is one of my favorite coins and I think a proof version would look great in my collection. I looked at a sample of PCGS and NGC slabs and noticed that none have the "full bands" (FB or FSB) designation. Do they not put that on the proof Mercury dimes? Is it just assumed that since they were struck in proof version they all would have full split bands? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The FB or FSB designation only applies to business strikes, similar to FBL on Franklins and FS on Jeffersons. Proofs always have greater detail than a business strike so it is assumed that the proofs should have those attributes as a norm.

I just looked at the PCGS website and all they list for proofs is the CAM option. Interesting. Someone with more knowledge in the series should be able to answer a little better, but it seems to me that they are doing as you suggested and assuming that the strike should have FB. Forgive my ignorance with the series. It also makes me curious while we're on the subject as to why you couldn't have a FB designation with circulated coins....Especially those in the mid to high AU range.

Obviously your collection is not in an Album from what you mentioned about how a Proof would look there. Not sure I've seen an Album with a spot for those proofs. Do you have one or just a place for those in a slab?

Just Carl, I actually do have a Mercury dime album for my Mercury dimes but you are correct in that there is no spot in the album for the proof dime. I just meant it would look nice in my overall collection. I have several coins in slabs and this would fit very nicely alongside the other slabs. While we are on the subject of albums, does the Whitman Lincoln Cent album have spaces for proofs?

As far as a hole for putting a proof, my Dansco album has several unlabeled holes that would work nicely for the task...

The Whitman Album also has slots for the 22 Plain, 55 Double Die, 60 Large and Small dates, 70S large and small dates, 72 Double Die, 95 double Die and probably soon will have all the RPM's ever found . Slight exageration. OOOPPPSs, forgot they have slots for all the 82's too. Most of my Whitman Cent Albums are 10 pages and difficult to close. I do have some that I made myself from blank pages and left out all the errors and proofs. Also, made an Album for all proofs of all denominations. Nice thing about the Whitman Album covers. Large enough in most instances to add many pages.

Thanks just carl, That is unfortunate that Proofs are included in the Whitman cents albums. I don't want "holes" in my albums so I guess I'm just gonna have to bite the bullet and buy the proofs in order to complete the album. :(

You would be better off contacting Whitman for blank covers and pages and make your own Album. Also, see if they still have those Gold Letters/numbers. You just place the sheet under a slot, use a stick thing to rub and then left. The thing you rubbed is now on the page. All takes time but lots cheaper than buying a lot of proofs. And if your really lazy and don't care, you can just use a black felt tip marker for the dates. Or just leave it all blank and put the coins you want, where you want. Like I said I've made lots of my own type of Albums. Another easier approach but does not look real great is to purchase a normal Whitman Album. Then purchase a dark blue Sharpie Permanent Marker. Blue out all the info under the slots and write in what you want with a Black marker. I've done that also. Doesn't look real professional but so what. They are all mine, mine, mine.
