nlp, very nice photos. The color looks very original, which is usually one of the hardest things to capture with good white balance.

Having said that, do you have a photo gallery here? If not, you can ask for one and Bobby can set you up. That will allow you to download and post I think 800K photos.

Thank you tights24. I need to do that. Last night I messed around with photo bucket for a while trying to figure out how to load pics there so that members could click to enlarge a pic posted here. Yup, I am photogenically challanged.

I've taken 5 pics of the same 1936 Walker with different size settings to see how I could get the quality transposed to here from my camera card. A 3648x2736=2,926,979 down to a 640x480=152,959 after cropping off excess background. I'll post the picture taken at the large setting and small setting.

First pic was taken in Large setting 3648x2736 and subsequently resized.

As long as you can achieve a sharp focus, there is never a reason to take a shot at less than the maximum resolution of the camera. You're already comfortable with resizing, so capture all the detail possible and go from there.

If I can assume that the lighting and exposure settings were identical in the two shots you posted, note the difference in contrast between the "large" and "small" versions. It's easily seen in the corners of the background, and around "IN GOD WE TRUST" on the coin itself.

Another thing: don't be afraid to post-process the image.I've always felt that there's no harm in enhancing an image as long as the result comes closer to the true appearance of the coin. Can you see the differences in the pic I'm posting, and is this one a little closer to how your coin actually appears?

Thanks SuperDave for the advice. The lighting was the same for both pics as they were taken in the same setup only seconds appart. Your enhanced view does look more like the actual coin. I'll play with that a little more. nlp
