looks to me like it qualifies for BB, it's not as dark as typical for later years, but the 1955 BBs usually trend a bit lighter like yours

When I see any darkened copper nickel coin, my first reaction is to always ask:- 'Has this coin been subjected to excessive heat stress - after it left the Mint?'

Noting the flattening on the obverse edge devices? The coin may have been heated and altered the color. The reverse edge devices seem more normal from what I can see.

that kind of flattening, and a general glossiness, is common on BBs, I've assumed it a consequence of the abnormal planchet annealing

Sorry this is not a genuine Black Beauty . It does not exhibit the characteristics of one . I'm one of just a few members who believe a true BB is not artificially made by heat . They are a product of improper annealing at the mint . Many guys make their own self called examples by heating the Nickels up in their homes .

I don't think this one was intentionally made, it wasn't even offered as one - it was in the middle of a roll of other BU nickels I bought to upgrade my Dansco album.

@Dear, if it is or not I can not pronounce, but it is nice. I like the small tent of blue on. Me I know the BB with the sides normal color of the Ni, but later was prove that not all are like this.
In any case it is a nice one.

Thanks Silvio, It does have some appeal whether it is or not - at any rate, it has been placed in my Dansco album amongst all the others.

Impossible to say how the coin acquired that toning, but I do like the look.

I agree that it is impossible to offer a reliable reason as to how the darkening was acquired.
For more information on improper annealing, have a look at Google Images: 'Nickel improper annealing'.
