Greetings to everyone, I'm from the South Coast of England, UK. I have recently inherited a very small collection of gold Sovereigns from my father who sadly passed away last February. I know nothing about Coins of any kind. However I would like to learn. The upload photo, is one of the coins which have a Dark Red Residue on them. I have seen articles and youtube clips about copper rust spots and marks, however the coin I have does not look anything like these rust spots and looks more like some kind of residue left from some kind testing or cleaning maybe. Please could anyone please enlighten as to what this Darek Red Residue could be? Many Thanks in advance, Mark |

Probably a cleaner called jewelers rouge. Made from iron oxide it can be alright to dark red color.

Looks like a deposit of some sort, but not particularly bad. I'd be inclined to leave it.

Greetings one more and many thanks to John1, 1847bill & Tom Goodheart @1847bill, now you mention jewelers rouge, it could be that. Maybe someone has used that on it..... @Tom Goodheart, like you say, I'm inclined not to try and clean it off and just leave it as it is..... @John1, many thanks for the encouragement on trying to post the photo again.  |

Overall that's a very nice coin. Certainly doesn't look like the typical copper spots we sometimes see on gold coins.

As a complete novice, I've started to try and learn about some of the variations on these. Like the horse tail, long, short, medium etc. The buried W.W. & Small and large B.P. - I'm sure there are many more variations to look for that I don't know about yet. Would you or anyone else know of a good source for me to learn more about the variations on these?

P.S. When I can find it, I have it somewhere, I have a fairly unusual ten-shilling uncirculated coin I would like to show on here. It's a coin I was gifted by a friend of my father back in the early 1970's. It's the only coin I have kept over the years, until I inherited my fathers coin collection, just recently. As soon as I find it, I'll take some photos and post it here.... |
