Hi, All,
I just rejoined the forum today, but I've been here before under the moniker of Milehigh. I hadn't posted since around 2013 so it's been awhile.
A little about my coin collecting history:
I was an avid collector throughout the 1990s. Back then the focus was on a U.S. type set of which a good amount was completed, including some gold. I also collected Korean coins: cash pieces from the Cho-Seon era all the way up through modern.
In 2001, I sold my collection to help fund one of my kids' college expenses.
After that, I sporadically started buying U.S. type coins again, maybe no more than one or two a year up through 2013.
After pretty much dropping out of the hobby a second time, I recently pulled out the albums, and the bug hit again.
This time around, the notion struck me that it would actually be a lot of fun to put together a complete set of modern coins out of circulation.
I was able to start with a huge glass jug in which my wife and I have been throwing pocket change for the last 15 years. There is probably around $500 worth of coins in that jug. It weighs a holy ton!
So far, I've found a substantial amount of post-1964 coinage to fill the holes. Initially, I'm sticking to obtaining a complete date/mint run of each denomination with no great emphasis on grade. Most of what I have found in the jar is not in bad shape, while some of it is pretty roached, especially nickels, dimes, and quarters from the 1970s - 1980s. I will upgrade them whenever I run into better specimens. Many of the coins I have found would almost qualify as MS, but I call them 'Very Nice AU' since they are, after all, pulled from circulation.
Since Mini-Dollars and half dollars don't circulate much, I have resorted to buying an occasional roll of each from my credit union.
Besides this, I have embarked on putting together a collection of an all denomination/year/mint set of coins between 1900-1964 and proof coins beyond those dates. Since my budget is limited, I'm sticking with grade Fine or better on most, but with some pieces, like
Barber halves, I'm willing to settle for VG if they are problem free and attractive. Same thing when it comes time to tackle some of those key dates.
Another part of my coin budget will be earmarked for continuing the quest for 18th and 19th century type coins.
So, that's me in a nutshell.
Glad to be back in the race!
Cheers.
