According to a widely circulated meme, you can buy them in bags of 100 at the dollar store. For $3 per bag.

Yes, when even China can't make mass-produced imitation plastic 1 cent coins for less than 3 cents each, it's a sign your coins are literally worthless.

What's worse, is that meme must now be a decade old or so. You can't buy a bag of 100 plastic pennies for less than $5 these days.

Perhaps there is a microchip in it that is scanned when you use the "coin?" :-)

Considering the current costs that the US Mint has to find in producing LMC's for circulation,
all LMC's should be produced in plastic by the injection molding method.

After all, there are lots of plastic banknotes in circulation around the World.
