Can someone please help me? I have this 1915 Austrian 4 ducat coin that looks to be gold. I haven't had it tested but it looks like gold.
It looks just like the 1915 4 ducat gold coin, but all of the 1915 4 ducat gold coins that I can find on the internet all weigh around 13.X grams. This coin only weighs 10.5g. Does anyone have any idea's what this could be - forgery? It's approximately 40mm wide.
With a reported weight of 10. 5 grams, my first suspicion is that this particular coin made of gold plated brass. I am aware that base metal fakes of the Austrian 4 Ducats are out there.
The only way to make a base metal core weigh the same as genuine, would be the thicken the core. Such a fake would still be easily detected.
To close the communication link about this coin - we did a test at a jeweler - it is made of 18k gold. I found it quite strange, I once read the fakes 1 sovereigns coins made in Italy and Saudi Arabia are made of 18k gold (750) and weigh only 0.2g less than the original 22k (.917).
Would the fact that Ducat standard is 23k make all that weight difference?
If it has exactly the same dimensions as genuine (which I seriously doubt), at 18 ct gold, it should weigh 12.55 grams. Therefore, I also seriously doubt that is composed of 18ct gold.
The only statement I can make with confidence, is that the core has a density of that between copper (8.93 g/cc), and 18ct gold (16.72 g/cc)
