The leading edge of the 'dent' looks to have been pealed away like a lamination.. Inside the 'dent' I can still see the denticles around the rim.
I hope others will chime in on this one..

I believe there was a void in the planchet that collapsed.

It's hard to say. It appears to be post-strike damage, as there is faint and blurry detail from the original strike on the damaged surface; the denticles pointed out by Dearborn, in particular.

It may be a delamination. Or it may be post-mint damage: somebody attached something to the coin (or attached the coin to something) and tore it off afterwards.

The amount of wear the coin shows indicates to me that it's post-mint damage, on the theory that "if it came out of the mint looking like that, surely somebody would have noticed".

What about:
Pre-strike delamination ?

I am in the delamination camp. Followed by circulation wear.

Though the deepest part is so dark it almost looks like a different metal (I assume the weight checks out?)

Looks like a post strike lamination issue that peeled off the coin when it the metal de-laminated and fell off the coin. Slight interest in these. Lowers the silver value a bit.
