This coin was offered to me quite a few years ago at an ANA show but the dealer was asking an amazing price for it and I politely declined. A few weeks ago it came up for auction and bingo, there are two copper ones and a platinum version, it is a beautiful coin in hand and oddly enough this coin has no reeding and weighs 8.6 grams, the original is struck on gold Edited by john100 12/14/2022 7:05 pm

I agree with Darryl! Has the RCM admitted to it or is it mint sport? Nice either way. MM

MM, there are a couple of other interesting error coins, from that same coin, currently listed with Heritage Auctions. Given the sheer number of errors with this particular coin, I suspect mint shenanigans were the culprit.
Nonetheless, they are still very cool!

The RCM has struck uniface coins either for trial or what ever purpose, like 1973 RCMP quarter and gifted to the Queen, 1976 Montreal Olympic big group of uniface trials belonging to the designer, some gold bullion maple leafs, and I believe the BOC museum has some dollars version. Back many years ago the US dealer asked 25K for the copper, 100K for platinum version, the prices were so out of reality there was no need to offer, he also said already sold the gold brockage for over 50K, so when this example showed up at reasonable price I took a shot, at the right price it is cool but not at 25K US. Most of the really cool coins had some help, but these uniface coins might be a trial or just an special order from upper management for rewarding foreign contracts. In hand this coin is bright shiny gloss copper colour, the photo had some shadow near the big horn sheep, any way just my thoughts.

Quote: they are not errors if mint sport. So says the man who sold me a 1978 1c struck struck on a 1977 5c... as an error.
