Hello Folks. Foreign coins are not my forte, but my brother in law just picked up a 1955 Canadian proof like set. I have not seen it but he wanted to know if the dollar coin is the Arnprior error. From what I have researched, the error dollar has 2 1/2 water lines in front of the canoe and the Obverse side has a die crack at the top of the letters between T and I of "GRATIA". I am still not certain at what to look for or a comparison of a normal 1955 to the Arnprior variety. Can someone please post a side by side of the 1955 dollar for comparison?

Yes the water lines for the Arnprior dollar are shorter and away from the canoe. A side by side comparison makes it fairly obvious which it is. Coins and Canada shows an example of the Arnprior dollar down the page a bit and the coin at the top is a normal dollar. Also the die break may or may not be there with an Arnprior.

Note for the Arnprior example you just want to look at the blown up portion as the coin in behind is not actually Arnprior.

I have a couple PL examples that I've blown up the relevant area on. Hopefully this helps. The toned one is a little harder to tell I guess.

Is it the result of over polishing the die?

Yeah I'm pretty sure all the various varieties with less water lines showing were the result of too much die polishing.

Thanks folks, you people are awesome! Now I know exactly what to look for when evaluating the coin. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all my friends at CCF!
