If I had to guess at an explanation, I'd assume heat stress. Perhaps somebody placed the coin on a block of dry ice? I'm assuming the cause was a cold solid rather than a cold liquid (like liquid nitrogen), since its only affecting your coin's high points - as if the portrait alone were touching something that made it crack.
