I got these coins at an antique shop in Bethlehem and would like opinions on them please. The weights are from top left to bottom right: 3.4g 2.6g 3.2g 2.9g 2.9g. An interesting story about the shop is that the owner was a Christian Arab and was the first person to acquire the Dead Sea Scrolls from the Arab youths that discovered them. The shop owner was then involved in a legal battle with the government of Israel for ownership. He was forced to accept a settlement and had to give up any claim to the scrolls.

Dead Sea Scrolls

They were found from 1946 to 1956 Thats 78 to 68 years ago. That is one very old coin seller.

They just do not look struck to me. But who am I.

I was on a trip in 2003 when I was at his shop, so at that time, he could have been in his 80's by my guess.

Let me start with the top left.

The coin would on the surface of it would be a Septimius Severus from Laodicea ad Mare with an unusual bust. It is however a modern Bulgarian imitation from dies engraved by the known forger Slavey. Examples can be found struck with a large combination of dies including many that are impossible. These struck examples have also been cast and many examples have been sold. The dies have been used to create denarii and aureii.

Here are a few examples of the fakes created from this obverse die:-

I could provide many more examples of the obverse.

The reverse die on this example is also a Slavey die used with a variety of obverses.

This is not a good sign for the remainder of the coins. I will look at the others shortly.

IN 1970, I travelled from India to Europe on an old Australian double deck bus**. Along the way I have been told some tales (some true, but I suspect most are not), in the bazaars.

Enough for the story, but
from my experience, buying ancient coins in ancient archaeological sites, and the towns that are near them, are not the best places to buy ancient coins.
In many countries along the tourist trail, buying genuine ancient coins and attempting to take them home is a criminal offence,
but
selling fakes to tourists is not.

**1949 Albion, 9 liter diesel, with 4 speed crash gearbox.
It served on the Manly to Palm Beach (Sydney) run.
Shipped as deck cargo to Mumbai, driven from there.
No need for comments about my trip, just to let you know that I have been in the tourist fake marketing situation, in the bazaars.

I don't recall offhand what's the situation in Israel... IIRC it's not that bad, but it's close enough that I'll probably need to (hopefully temporarily) refocus my collection from anything remotely ancient to OFEC or paper money or modern type sets or something else where I wouldn't end up with cultural property problems.
