I can see examples of this coin on Cuds on coins in the retained pre Cuds section (4) different times but they do not identify the area that I have in question.

@I66, if you are having trouble with posting multiple of the same pic rather than different ones, it might be because you are giving more than one file the same name.

With regard to this cent, it is hard to know that this isn't just metal smeared over from the upright of the letter E. I'm interested to see if anyone has other thoughts.

Spence thanks for looking not likely metal smear this is 2 different coins same effect if you look at Cuds on coins under retained and pre Cuds for 1940 s there are 4 examples of this coin there ( pc-1c-1940s-69r) (pc-1c-1940s-67r) (pc-1c-1940s-02r)(red-1c-1940s-52r) but they are not identifying the area I have in question

Might be a small die chip or PMD.

Don't think it is PMD if it is on 2 different coins in the exact place and same shape. It is also raised, so I think something hit the die and dented it.

The die dent does seem to be the most plausible answer to what I'm seeing thanks for all your reply's
