There's an "M" on the opposite side of the "D". "MD" is abbreviated Latin for "Mater Dei", the title of the Virgin Mary.

I think the shield is from Hungary, but I'm not familiar with this specific coin type.

I agree that shield looks like something used by a Hungarian ruler (Arpad arms on the left were characteristic of the Angevin kings and queens who ruled in the 14th century). I wonder if it could pertain to Queen Mary?

I scrolled through EddieDiz thread on Hungarian denars and couldn;t find it.

I'd not spotted the M (good to have another pair of eyes looking!) - so I'm a bit further forward. I went through the Numista listings for Hungary, plus searched for MD, it remains an enigma for now....
