Hello there guys,

New to all this coin melarky and any way to get a leg up in the current economy would be great. Just wanted to know if these coins are worth anything more than their assigned value

I'm asking about that particular pound (on a layer above the rest) as the top of the thistle seems unusually thin

Please let me know if I'm doing this right

Hello and to the Forum!

From the photos it's very hard to evaluate your coins - you should post a clear, close-up picture of both sides of each coin. Condition is very important and from a small photo it's hard to tell what condition a coin is in.

Generally most of the modern British 50p and £2 commemorative coins are worth only face value in circulated condition, although you can often get a bit more than that on ebay. Check 'sold listings' on ebay to see what coins have actually sold for, rather than current live listings, as some chancers list very common coins for ridiculous prices. I've sold a few Beatrix Potter 50p coins on ebay for between £1 and £2 but by the time you add the ebay fees and think about the effort it takes to wrap the coins up and post them, it's hardly worthwhile. Last summer a local coin dealer had some on sale at a local Boot Fair for 75p each and never sold any.

The Check Your Change website is a good resource for modern UK coins. Generally any coin listed with a scarcity value of 1 will be only worth face value: https://www.checkyourchange.co.uk/

With the unusual £1 coin, please could you post clear photos directly onto the forum? Looking at the slightly mushy 'One Pound' lettering on the reverse, I wonder whether it might be a forgery, but it's hard to tell without a good photograph.
