Is the tiny 5 in the date normal for this year?

Also - my book lists a "D of DEI tipped" variety, and I am wondering how to identify that... since I notice that the D normally has serifs.

Thanks!

It's not listed as a variety in my book, and I've never heard of it. It does look weird, but the other digits look like they've been spread out a bit. I wish I knew more about this..

That's cool! Yeah--that 5 is notably smaller than the previous digits.
As a comparison, I'm sure you saw this one on ebay:

Interesting how the "18" looks similar in both cases, while the "51" appears positioned differently.
The 5 on your coin looks smaller, or perhaps the punch was not sunk as deep into the die?

Well looking at the pictures, the edges of the 5 of the first coin (small 5) seem to fit within the two end denticle of a trio, whereas on the lower coin it clearly overlaps.

Minor oddities may be common with these coins but interesting to note this.

If the 5 was made with a smaller punch, that would be a very interesting variety.

Thanks for the info guys, and thanks Tim for the compliment! =)

I'm still wondering about the tipped D variety, which the Krause books lists as considerably more valuable.
