I received this little gem when I was 11 years old. I had opened my first savings account and this was a gift from the S&L I kept her in a tiny, plastic box with all of my other treasures...hence, the marks on her face. At the time, I didn't know how to store coins or why.

When I came to Australia as an 11 year old, I had no coins or any interest in collecting them. We stayed in a hostel, while we got organised and found a home to live in. One day while running through the bush on the hostel site, I tripped on a rock, so I stopped to see what I had tripped on and the rock had flipped over, and underneath were a whole heap of old Aussie pennies and half pennies. Thus started my coin collection. Here is just one of those coins, but has been cleaned, as I didn't know any better....

I was given a few coins that started my collection in the US. But I can't really say which was the first coin I purchased, but am pretty certain it was one of the below.

I would like to merge this topic with the one from CarrsCoins and call it "Post Your First Collected or Purchased Coin" if that is okay with dsking and CarrsCoins.

I know this is an old topic, but here is the coin that got me started: This was given to me by a relative in or about 1971. I have no recollection of seeing any foreign (or old) coins prior to that. The same relative later gave me many other coins, including (but by no means limited to) 13 additional Mexican 20 centavos coins dated between 1943 and 1971. (To this day the only type of foreign coin I have more of than this is Canadian pennies.)

I collected this sweet little 1923 France Bon Pour 50 centimes token from my parents' penny jar back in the '60s. It seemed so old and exotic! Now it would be like a kid finding an arcade token from the '80s in the family penny jar.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures
