Quote: ... are you ever concerned that these carry with them certain energies that are "unclean", so to speak? Nope. I know my coins possess energy in their chemical bonds and nuclear structures. And they have positional potential energy. I know that if I drop one, that positional potential energy gets converted into kinetic energy, and this worries me because if it drops far enough, that kinetic energy can eventually contribute to damaging the coin when it hits the floor and the kinetic energy is converted to work done by the floor on the coin. There is nothing mystical about any of this. However, if their is an exorcism that can be performed to make sure I never drop a coin, this cound be of interest.

I feel reasonably certain that my collection is both halal and kosher.
And there is enough heavy metal in the alloys to kill most of the bugs. That is, provided don't eat any of them.

Quote: In terms of toxic heavy metals, of course, yes. Never thought of it that way! I was in fact thinking in terms of "there might be bad microbes stuck in the patina", but yeah, after enough centuries they'd probably be dead bad microbes even if there were any in the first place. As for haunting, yeah lol no. I do sometimes imagine spirits stuck in coins (it sounds very uncomfortable...), but I hardly ever envision such spirits capable of affecting their surroundings in a negative-to-humans way.

Carry diseases? Doubtful but, anythings possible Metals? Sure that's what they are. Risky metals? Not so much. Spirits? Possibly...coins do have a lot of history attached to them.
The only coin that gives me the heebie jeepies is a Widow's Mite. I don't know why but, I stay away from them!
My generation ate a LOT of things that are supposedly not acceptable today...including mud pies! That said, our longevity is long and hardy, in spite of ourselves. No bicycle helmets, no seat belts, no to a lot of things and we're still around - mostly.
Worry is the worst of all evils IMHO! Don't do it...none of us live forever, enjoy your "in the now"!

There are some haunted coin/tokens being sold on ebay https://hauntedantiqueshop.com/the-...aunted-ebay/You've probably heard the phrase: "Find a penny, pick it up, all day long you'll have good luck." Rooted in Greek mythology, coins were placed on the eyes of the dead in order to provide them safe passage into the afterlife. It is believed the boatman on the river Styx, Charon, had to be paid to ferry you across. According to Feng Shui, it's considered bad luck to put your purse on the floor and you will lose money if you do so. It's disrespectful if you place your money in such a place and must signal the universe that you don't value it. There's a superstition that says when a specific palm itches, it's a sign f wealth and means money coming in. Your itching left palm means money coming in, and your itching right palm is losing money. The $2 bill was often thought to be bad luck, as "deuce" was a name for the devil. Recipients would tear off one corner, believing it would negate the bad luck of the bill. This caused many of the bills to be taken out of circulation as mutilated currency. https://www.cnbstl.com/about-us/new...-dollar-billAs to the weird dreams. Poor dream recall, stressful or bizarre dreams, or nightmares, signs which the brillant late Carl Pfeiffer, MD in the 1970s attributed to low vitamin B6 status. He suggested that your dreams and dream recall serve as a good indicator of your need for vitamin B6. You should dream every night and you should remember your dreams. They should be pleasant—the kind of dreams where you wake up and want to close your eyes and continue dreaming. This was recently studied. Taking vitamin B6 improved people's ability to recall dreams compared to a placebo. Prior to taking the supplements, many of the participants rarely remembered their dreams, but they reported improvements by the end of the study. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releas...27100258.htmSupplementation with higher concentrations of the pyridoxine form of Vitamin B6 actually leads to decreased vitamin B6 function and it competitively inhibits the active pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P5P) form according to recent research. So be aware generally that you should not take pyridoxine form of B6 as a supplement as this form inhibits the active P5P form https://www.sciencedirect.com/scien...959?via=ihub Takng too much pyridoxine form therefore could also cause b6 deficiency and lead to the weird dreams.

A few of the things I collect might have some of that energy IF! I believed in that stuff. I have a half dozen varieties of manillas ("slave bracelets'), Operation Bernhard notes created by the Nazi SS and printed by concentration camp inmates, various primitive pieces used for bride purchases, leper colony tokens and, of course, animal hides and fur used for early trading. I don't believe that inanimate objects carry energies good or bad, so I hold them as objects that were touched by good, or bad, as a lesson and a reminder of history.

But it doesn't explain why my wallet gets lighter after a trip to the LCS

The only thing supernatural about my collection is when my wife asks "Why did you spend so much on a coin"? Then I pull a Flip Wilson quote on her and say "The Devil Made Me Do It"

Rinse with holy water, pat dry, do not rub. This is how one performs a numismatically approved exorcism. You're welcome.

An interesting topic and thx to all for generally keeping the discussion numismatic focused.

I just bathe my coins in "pure" acetone for complete atonement and cleansing of the "bad juju" organics. Let dry with evaporation and store in approved archival holders in a safe and secure environment.
Never worried about the "supernatural spirits" that may, or may not, be attached or connected to them.
Pretty straight forword I believe.
