Question,

When the initials on 1909 Wheat penny was removed, is it true they immediately tried to file off the letters from the working die using crude tools?
If so, the pennies struck using the die with the filed off letters is an error and/or rare?

Could this possibly be one of those coins?

to the CCF In order to remove the VDB, they would have to grind them off the die, which would result in a big hump where they should be. The die is a reverse of the coin.

The coins that were made with the die that was altered, what are those coins considered? And are there any known examples to compare too?

Hold on, I just woke up. Might read up on error-ref, because I'm of no help. Thanks, Doug.

You can faintly see the V.D.B. on the bottom of the reverse.

Was up ALL NIGHT searching for examples. A 1916 coin was mentioned buy no photos. I also read it is possible to find the initials on coins dating up 1917 because they refused the dies. I'm still looking for photos as reference. No luck yet.

the initials on the die are incuse, they cannot be filed off. The fields would have to be polished down to the level of the bottom of the initials, this of course will create a huge dimple on the die and a raised bump on the coin.
