Top is a large date, bottom is a small date. Look where the downward "slice" of the number meets the bottom cross bar. The large date goes straight into the cross bar, the small date has a rounded corner where they meet.

to CCF, Tiamat! 1982 cents can be tricky so you're in the right place for advice.

Hey everybody, Thanks for all the replies.. I hope I can learn and figure this out eventually.. but now I am wondering what makes both these coins large dates when they look different.. At least they look different to me but I'm still new to this and I could be seeing things but in the picture that keith12 sent, the large date 2 looks like it's a little crooked. In the double picture I sent, the coin on top, the 2 looks crooked like the large date example keith12 sent, but with the coin on the bottom, the 2 does not look crooked and is completely open on the backside as illustrated by an arrow on the small date picture keith12 sent.. This is kind of confusing for me.. Am I seeing things? Or can they look different and both be large dates?

Well the mint des not use just o die to make coins, they use SEVERAL (I use caps to exaggerate that). the design from one die to another can be slightly different , also you need to take into account the die state - is it a new die, or a very old and worn out one?
But these 2 coins are large date.
On a large date - if you flip it up-side down it appears as a '7' (with a curve at the bottom)
