Every once in awhile I have to get confirmation on one of these! Pretty sure it's MD, but clarification is always nice. Thanks all!

You are correct. Note the affect on the devices:
1. Are the devices reduced from normal or showing spread?

Note the flat look and also the raised areas where the metal was moved post strike by the Machine Doubling?

2. The dots, are they reduced or showing spread on them?
1953-Cent-DDR-Or-MD.-Still-Fools-Me!
3. Spread is an enlarging of the devices? Are you seeing this on your coin?
1953-Cent-DDR-Or-MD.-Still-Fools-Me!
4. Machine Doubling changes the affect on the devices when they flow around a circle. That also is seen on your coin.

Machine Doubling can vary from strike to strike:
1953-Cent-DDR-Or-MD.-Still-Fools-Me!
Machine Doubling is machine movement that damages the devices post strike. Machine Doubling can happen on doubled dies as well.
1953-Cent-DDR-Or-MD.-Still-Fools-Me!
But what happens during Machine Doubling? One side of the devices will have the contour of the design affected.
1953-Cent-DDR-Or-MD.-Still-Fools-Me!
Usually flattened and will show a 90 degree angle on the affected area. With the contour removal, the flat area is more reflective.

Inverted colors will help show the glare that Machine Doubling causes.
1953-Cent-DDR-Or-MD.-Still-Fools-Me!
Note on the non inverted color image, the glare hides the Machine Doubling. (but it is there and seen on the inverted color image)
The contour allows the light to show lighter on the tops of the devices and darken as it contours to the base of the devices.

So with this removed, we see light and a sharp step downwards to the flat step down.

CoopHome: How can I tell the differences between a Machine Doubling and a doubled die?device sizes. reduced/enlarged from a normal coin? Machine Doubling alters devices. Machine Doubling can happen on a doubled die. but only a hub doubled die, can strike a doubled die coin. Machine Doubling is caused by the machine. a doubled die creates a doubled die coin because of the doubling on the die.

Most times on a doubled reverse you will notice that the dot between the E.P.U will be shaped like a snowman. (the first thing I look for on a suspected DDR)
